'The Freelancer'
by Drew Rogers
. . .
A writer, who has post-poned the release of his acclaimed novel because of his fear of fame, seeks the paranormal. He searches for supernatural cases, which he writes up for various papers and magazines. Though his novel is about aliens, he is a disbeliever and will stay that way. After his wife learns that she's pregnant, she tells him that he has until their child is born to continue his freelance work, but then he must allow his publishing company to release his novel, Surfacing. He has nine months (or one season) to do this. Instead of seeking the X-Files route of conspiracies, the Freelancer takes the Millennium and Kolchak route with more wit and better plots.
