'The Chain'
by Jeff Woodard
. . .
Soon after hearing that he has
only months to live,
35ish Cross is recruited into
"The Chain". All he has to do is kill
another terminally ill person,
a poor shmuck
one link down in the chain.
Cross' reward will be a bullet
to the head from
a guy one link up. That way,
he won't suffer, and his beloved wife
will collect on the double indemnity
accident provision
of his life insurance policy.
But things go terribly, fatally wrong
when he finds out that his target
is not ill, and that
maybe his wife is in up to her
pretty eyebrows
in the whole nasty affair. But
by that time,
it might be too late.
Comments
The Chain is a nourish thriller
about a dying man in California
caught between a blinding love
for his wife and a gnawing,
foreboding realization that
he's being setup up by
the people he cares for most.
In a story where nothing is what
it appears,
the greatest peril is not from
medical illnesses, but from diseases
called jealousy, greed,
and betrayal.
The Chain earned The Gold Award
(1st place) at the 1998 WorldFest Flagstaff
International Film Festival.
It was also named a winner (5th place) at the
1998 Top Dog Production Company
Screenplay competition, and was a finalist
at the 1998 Southwest Writer's
Workshop Screenplay Contest
and a semifinalist at the 1998
Maui Screenplay
Competition.
