'Wolves At The Door'
by Ray Chatelin
. . .
If 10 year-old Bobby Curtis saves
the animals,
it could destroy his family.
Regardless,
he has chosen to support an
issue he feels is morally just.
The nearby pulp mill is closing
down,
threatening economic hardship
throughout the region
and the loss of the Curtis farm.
The only hope
is a proposed mega-resort development
instigated by the town’s mayor
- who coincidentally owns property
nearby -
that would take advantage of
underground hot springs.
The Townspeople of Jackson’s
Corner,
who two years before had turned
down
a much smaller proposal in a
referendum,
this time support the town-saving,
world-class resort.
Complicating matters
is the sudden appearance of
Grey Wolves,
animals not seen for 50 years,
who have made the hot springs
their home
during a bitterly cold,
Montana winter.
Ailing, 78-year-old “Mac” McLaughlin,
who publishes on the Internet
and is the town maverick,
wants the government to declare
the region off-limits
to developers.
He and his grandson, Sean,
director of The Wildlife Society,
lead a fight
to save the animals.
