. . .
Jake is no supercop.
Dogged perseverance and dedication to principle
compensate for his lack of brilliance and luck.
A liberal transplanted
from Berkeley,
Jake despises police vigilantism, yet chases shadows in his own obsession
to track down his wife’s hate-killer.
Unable to nab her slayer,
and now a new faceless serial killer, Jake begins doubting his competence
as leader of a shorthanded homicide department. Still, he can’t let this
baggage interfere with his role as mentor
to his love-struck teen son.
Like clockwork the serial
killer has rifled down three sleazy victims;
but it is only after the fourth, an influential businessman,
that Jake is granted another officer…
the Mayor’s rookie son who is being groomed
for politics.
Jake formulates a theory
narrowing down the sniper’s hideout
to one of a handful of locations. These yield nothing, and other leads
only confound the investigation.
Forensics results deal
the final blow to his theory,
yet indicate a similarity amongst the victims from which Jake formulates
a new strategy including a sting operation using
pornographic chatrooms on the Internet.
He is convinced there
are others out there
consumed with their own demons. Others who may cross paths
from vastly different worlds, yet whose complementing obsessions
form a twisted covenant.
Unknown to Jake,
meddling at higher levels backfires his sting into tragedy.
Meanwhile, the killer claims another victim
on schedule.
The shootings have frightened
away
the mob’s vice business and they offer to fabricate Jake a solution to
the killings, if he’ll just play along. Principle-bound Jake rejects it
outright, drawing their wrath. At a news conference Jake takes heat from
hate-mongering elements,
but parlays the opportunity to lure out his wife’s killer.
Without divine serendipity
or luck,
Jake draws every bit of his savvy to escape alive.
Jake has hit rock bottom,
yet stubbornly resumes his scarred strategy as his staff grows uneasy
about his leadership. Jake’s perseverance is rewarded in a suspenseful
unexpected climax, resolving both his outer
and inner conflicts.
