- A Tanglewood
Tale True Story Drama Budget: $4.8M Story of friendship between
legendary authors Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
They met when both were broke and Hawthorne was run out of
Salem, Mass. for ridiculing politicians in print. Melville
was run out of New York because of the “depraved” sexuality
in his life and his books. Hawthorne was reclusive and hardly
spoke in public or went to social gatherings, but something
in Melville brought out a zest for living and conversation
in Hawthorne. He was broke, alone and supported himself by
writing children’s stories. Their friendship was the most
intense of either’s life. Something happened to end the friendship.
After Hawthorne left the Berkshires in the dead cold of winter,
Melville never published another novel while he was alive.
